3D10 & 1D100

The last time I played an actual role playing game with dice was a minor Battletech campaign a very long time ago, but I thought the title was an apt metaphor for my self-hosted journey.

My quest for data sovereignty has taken as many high roads as it has murky low paths along the way. Starting with one idea that, like a snowball rolling downhill, has kept growing. At first I just wanted to build a simple website, but like the story of Dune, when one chapter ended, another began.

Years have passed since then, most things have worked but some did not. Along the way, my vision kept changing in what it was I was trying to accomplish and how to see it fulfilled. From a single old desktop hosting a Minecraft server, to a slightly more powerful laptop running a handful of virtual machines, to now; a home lab with a couple of donated servers and some other end of life pieces of equipment purchased online.

This is just an introduction, I will get into more detail at some point but right now I have multiple virtual machines running a variety of services. The 3D10 actually is my inside joke referring to nearly thirty subdomains split between internal data sovereignty/privacy focused services and public, privacy respecting services. The latter being largely unused for quite some time as my hardware did not really have the capability to support more than a few users up til now. The 1D100 refers to possible future growth as a value for value web-host –more on that another time– capable of supporting multi-tenancy sites for small, local businesses who are likely paying way too much for what they are receiving, or just do not have a web presence at all.

As things progress; I should have more articles talking about what is running and what it is meant to do, links to other areas on the public side and any someone may want to use them, etc. And, like Dune, this saga is far from over.
